Last week, we had the joy of attending my 4-year-old daughter’s Christmas concert, a festive milestone that I’ve been eagerly anticipating for weeks. The production, delightfully titled Whoops-a-Daisy Angel, added a playful twist to the traditional nativity story. It followed the adventures of an accident-prone angel tasked with overseeing the very first Christmas. With its charming blend of humour and heart, the story provided plenty of laughs and the occasional emotional lump in the throat.

Of course, the highlight for me was my daughter’s role as the (not so) well-known Christmas sheep. Decked out in an adorable costume complete with fluffy ears, she brought a mix of cuteness and confidence to the stage. She had a few lines, and although her part was small, she delivered them with enthusiasm that lit up the room, and made Mrs W and myself laugh. It’s incredible to see how much pride even the littlest performers take in their roles. Her smile as she spoke her lines made me realise just how magical and transformative these moments can be for young children.

The concert itself was a heartwarming reminder of the effort that goes into these productions. From the lively songs to the creative set design, it was clear the teachers and children had poured their hearts into making the evening special for all of us in the audience. There was something uniquely touching about the innocence of their storytelling, as each child brought their character to life in their own unique way.

As I sat there watching, I couldn’t help but imagine what next year might hold. Perhaps a larger role? A sheep again? Or maybe she’ll surprise us as a star, angel, or narrator. Whatever it may be, I’ll be the proud parent in the audience, cheering her on and treasuring every moment. For now, I’m simply thankful for the joy and wonder she brought to the stage as our little Christmas sheep. Moments like these remind me how quickly they grow up—and how important it is to cherish every step of the way.
