The master of wisdom Ben Sira taught in his book about the importance of spiritual life, the history of the nation of Israel in the Old Testament is a reminder that those who serve God and his wisdom with a heart of flesh are guided and protected by the Lord. This is why Ben Sira stated: "No evil can harm the one who fears the LORD; through trials, again and again he is rescued" Ben Sira 33:1. The fear of God is a perfect virtue whose origin is the Most High, this grace is defined by the Fathers of the church as constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability.
This teaching of the wise is an expression of an older teaching that comes from the Book of Psalms, and which is the beginning of all the sapiential literature in the Bible: "The LORD protects everyone who follows him, but the wicked follow a road that leads to ruin" Psalm 1:6. The Bible constantly teaches men to seek that fear, that heart of flesh, which is the origin of common sense, because there is also an underlying logic: God helps those who help themselves.
According to the Book of Genesis, Noah feared God, and that is why God saved him and his family from the universal flood by ordering him to build the ark. Joseph, one of Jacob's sons, received dreams from God and because of his fear he was protected from all dangers. He was sold as a slave in Egypt, he was imprisoned due to a false accusation of adultery, and yet he arrived at the court of the Pharaoh where he interpreted correctly some mysterious dreams for the great ruler and was thus named vizier of the kingdom. The gift of Fear of God is ultimately a powerful spiritual weapon that the creator of all things places in the hands of those who must fulfill a providential plan; humanity is a civilization still in development, and the truth is that God has already determined the destiny of all things, but in contrast to this fact is the freedom of man, and therefore the uncertainty of the present.
