Ayurveda means 'the science of life' and is based on age-old traditions aimed at maintaining health and preventing illness. According to Ayurvedic expert Geeta Vara in her book, Ayurveda: A Practical Guide to Optimal Health, Healing and Vitality, “Ayurveda is the oldest known medical science, taking a total holistic approach to well-being encompassing mind, body, emotions, soul, and environmental influences, including the seasons and lunar and solar cycles.”

Vara highlights that this ancient knowledge is increasingly important as modern life distances us from our natural rhythms. She emphasizes that connecting with our true selves is essential in a world reliant on technology and synthetic solutions.

Ayurveda identifies that we all have unique physical and mental traits. Health in body, mind, and soul occurs when these traits are balanced. These traits manifest as energies called doshas.

There are three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, each formed from different blends of the five elements: space, water, earth, fire, and air. While everyone has a unique blend of doshas, usually one is more dominant.

Your primary dosha reflects your personality and guides the Ayurvedic principles best suited for your health. It influences your diet and exercise, making it crucial for achieving inner harmony.
