Surgical skills club: suturing and tying knots
6 comments
Hello my dear Steemians,
It is another normal day at my work but as often it happens we not only do our usual work like performing surgeries but also we continue to teach our young doctors to develop skills of tying knots like when we need to tie the ligature around bleeding vessels or when we are suturing and some ties need to be tied up with fingers and not on instruments because this way we could feel how much tension we apply on tissue so that it will not cut off the blood supply of tissue.
So today was the day when I had to do some teaching and we also have such kits that we use in order to do tying and suturing. The set on the top picture you can see a needle holder, forceps and scissors and needle with sutures.
Here is a needle that we use for tissue and it has slow absorbable suture. Often they have such colours that they are easy to recognise when we suturing the tissue. The need has a curve so that it is easy to pass through the tissue.
On this set we have a tissue that should represent human tissue and the suturing is done with on needle holder. Once both side of tissue taken into the suture that will be then tied on instrument.
Knot should be tied up 5 to 6 times because we do not want it to be loose and the tissue fall apart.
After a minute the 3 sutures been done and the wound is closed.
Using these two sponges that have round form and simulating the bowel loops when we need to stitch two together.
Often we need to tie knots using our hands that is why this little device, there is a special technique that we use and we tie 60 knots in a minute, we need to learn to do it with right and left hand but also even with closed eyes.
At the end there is such chain, that can continue till the end of the thread.
All the participants had fun and were very excited to be able to do this work. It is very satisfying to have good result that gives a feeling of being a surgeon.
That day was a good day but also it was very good end of the day, it is very satisfying to receive such thankful card from a patient who was discharged that is why I wanted to share it here.
