Hamas officials are suggesting that the militant group could abandon its armed struggle against Israel if Palestinians establish an independent state in territories captured by Israel in the 1967 war.

This suggests a softening of Hamas' position as its fate is tied to Israel's control of the Gaza Strip. Hamas has long called for the destruction of the Jewish state and has traditionally rejected a two-state solution.
