Hello, friends welcome to my post in which I have discussed "Epilepsy and the use of screens" as part of my participation in this 👉contest organized by @aaliarubab

According to the World Health Organization;

Epilepsy is a chronic noncommunicable disease of the brain that affects around 50 million people worldwide. It is characterized by recurrent seizures, which are brief episodes of involuntary movement that may involve a part of the body (partial) or the entire body (generalized) and are sometimes accompanied by loss of consciousness and control of bowel or bladder function.Source

Epilepsy, is a type of seizure disorder in humans where seizures are triggered by certain visual stimuli, like flashing or flickering light or pattern most particularly photosensitive epilepsy. Epilepsy is rare as it only manifests in people who are particularly sensitive to visual stimuli which is caused by the rapid flickering of screens like those of phones, computer TV, and others.

What to know about epilepsy and screen use

  • Photosensitive Epilepsy
    This kind of epilepsy affects a small percentage of people who are affected with epilepsy. It is mostly common in children and teenagers and often becomes apparent when they are been exposed to cement visual stimuli such as flashlights, alternating images, and others.

  • Screen-related triggers:
    When looking at the screen certain potential conditions can potentially trigger seizures like; rapid, repetitive flashes, bright, flashing lights or images, high contrast patterns, and specific flicker rates in TV.

Mitigation and Prevention

  • Adjust screen settings:
    It is good to lower the brightness of the screening filters to reduce brightness and avoid looking at videos or games with high rapid flashing lights.

  • Safe viewing practices: It is also good to distance ourselves from the screen to help reduce exposure to flashing content or fast-moving content and taking regular bring from viewing movies can help us.

  • Use of protective lenses: Special glasses that filter out specific wavelengths of light can help to reduce the likelihood of a seizure.

The reason why the use of screens can trigger some people with photosensitive to develop epilepsy is because of too much concentration on the screen. Anyone sensitive to visual stimuli may want to take precautions when using screens or engaging him or herself in digital content that rapidly visual changes.
