What is stress eating?
Comfort eating is self- indulgence in food owing to stress causing factors which include anxiety, sadness or boredom. It is a process of seeking solace and brief escape from unfavorable emotions. But it do also have its drawbacks such as creating distorted perception towards eating habits and consequently leads to take on weight.
Why do people stress eat?
- Emotional comfort: Comfort can be associated with consumption of some certain types of food products.
- Habit: Stress eating is something that, like most bad habits, comes naturally in response to certain events or feelings.
Boredom: Time passed while eating can also be used to as a manner of overcoming boredom.
How to manage stress eating:Identify triggers: The following gives an explanation of the conditions that lead to stress induced eating.
Healthy coping mechanisms: Look for other coping mechanisms that will not involve alcohol to include exercise, meditating, or spending some time with friends and family members.
Mindful eating: Notice when feeling hungry and … full and don’t rush in eating the food.
Healthy diet: Take a lot of fruits and vegetables and whole grain foods frequently.
And do not forget that you are Okay and should avoid such negative thinking as self-blame. If you have chosen to address stress eating, it is best to consult with a doctor or a psychologist).
Negative effects of stress eating?
Stress eating, while providing temporary relief, can have several negative effects on your physical and mental health:
- Weight Gain: Taking foods high in calories increases the chances of getting obesity since the body stores the excess nutrients.
- Nutritional Imbalance: The food that stress brings are usually the wrong types of foods – comfort foods – which do not supply the body with nutrients that it needs.
- Digestive Issues: It is evident that consuming excessive food can lead to heartburn, bloating and indigestion problems.
- Increased Stress: Ironically, stress eating has been found to actually increase stress levels when the person is over time.
- Negative Self-Image: Poor dieting habits are known to cause adverse effects of the body image and poor body self-images.

Since work had intensity, deadlines, and priorities, by night’s end, I would have a sinking feeling in the middle of my chest accompanied by a list of outstanding matters running in my head. Frequently I would stroll into the kitchen, as one would into a café called “Eat & Chill”, in quest of a cup of chai or a plate of cheesy fries. When that first taste reached my lips or tongue, I’m sure I would feel something that resembled relief for but a moment. Tastes and sensations would anchor me, and give me a brief respite from the storm inside the skull.
As much as it makes me feel relieved in the current moment, I think I would realize later on that this behavior is not doing me any favor. If only once or twice, do you occasionally feel like this when you stress eat?
