Way back in 1986, Atari released Super Sprint into arcades and the Nintendo Entertainment System with Midway and Tengen respectively. Fans were treated to a single screen race affair pitting up to three players against each other (only in the arcade). Super Sprint did see release on various computers and included in retro re-releases over the last couple decades. Now, Atari is continuing the franchise after a few sequels and updates in the 80’s. NeoSprint is an updated take on the classic with new graphics and sound for modern platforms.

Reviving a Franchise

As mentioned already, the Sprint franchise is from the 80’s bringing some unique challenges to developers attempting to revive it. One being graphics, change too much and fans won’t accept the new game as an entry into the franchise. Change too little brings pundits complaining about what they are getting for the price. NeoSprint looks like it has found the sweet spot by keeping a neo retro look and adding other things to the game.

In NeoSprint, you will be able to play multiplayer with up to eight players on a single screen. Modes include Campaign, Grand Prix, Obstacle Courses, and Time Trials.

The Details Matter

The meat of this update is the track builder mode. At least in my opinion. Now, where they can mess this up is by not allowing fans to share their creations online. They must include this in the track building mode – it will surely help more fans get interested.

There is no word on sharing track creations yet, I hope they allow that in the final version.

They already offer tons of customization of your car and driver, including the original ‘red’ and ‘blue’ color schemes. I hope more details are made available as we near the “Summer 2024” release date.
