Introduction

I just believe everyone has experienced a shocking moment in one way or the other. It depends on how your own appear. There are many people who get shocked over issues and are really bothered, either positive or negative. In the same way, there are those who get affected by a shocking moment, and they're either surprised or not even moved in any instance.

Talking about shocking moments, I have had shocking moments a few times. I love pleasant surprises and not negative shocks that will cause me partial hypertension, sort of.

For the sake of this contest, I will share a particular shocking moment that got me sleepless nights and so many worries and some points taught me a lesson and then helped me to be a better person today.

My shocking Moment

I had a shocking moment about five years ago when I was announced in my church as a music director. I never thought about it, neither did I see it coming to me. To be sincere, I felt I was the last person to be given such a position and responsibility. I wasn't qualified to say.

It was on a Sunday morning in January 2019, that my pastor mentioned my name in the congregation and announced my new position as the music director. To say I was surprised is an understatement. I was tensed up, and could just manage to walk up to the front of the church.

I was still an amateur singer who was just trying her best. I got home that day and couldn't eat, I felt cold and confused, knowing the challenge that follows such roles.

I was disturbed for months trying to get myself to accept and adjust to the new position. There were nights I would just lie down without being able to sleep. I'll be thinking about how to bring new reforms and innovations to the department.

I sought advice/counsel from individuals, in order to gain more ideas to take over my new position. Through the help of individuals and by the grace of God, I got developed, worked on my self-esteem and got flowing.

I'd like to mention that I made mistakes, took wrong decisions and also stepped on people's toes. It was still a training ground for me. I learnt from my mistakes, I apologised where necessary and also stood firm where it was necessary to.

The results of the Shocking Moment I experienced
  • Today, I could face and speak fluently and confidently to the crowd no matter the calibre of people who are there.

  • I have better self-esteem compared to when I took over the position.

  • I make few mistakes compared to years back.

  • The leadership position is easier for me now than it was at the beginning. I'm no longer tensed up.

  • I have a better way of dealing with issues and individuals than I started.

  • I can manage my emotions more than I started. I used to be angry and easily provoked, but that's no more.

Conclusion

Every leadership position has its challenges, and so is mine. But every leader needs wisdom and strategy to deal with those challenges which, by the grace of God, I am trying my best.

Thank you for giving me the audience to express myself after five years. I truly appreciate this.
