Greetings Everyone, This is Shahariar (username shahariar1). From Bangladesh

Hello @mostofajaman. I am going to participate in your contest with great enthusiasm. I live in the village. And I am very involved in agriculture. I know about tree grafting. I have prior knowledge about this. And today you have studied about t to participate in this competition. Let's dive deep into your competition.

What is grafting, Have you seen or done grafting?: Tree grafting is a good way to propagate plants from a plant stem or corolla. There are many plants that do not propagate from seeds. Plant propagation is done by connecting the stems of those plants with other plants. Again, this type of tree grafting is also done in seed trees for quick fruiting.

I am familiar with this tree grafting. I saw it and tried it myself. Although I didn't get good results the first time. But I think if I do grafting now I will definitely get better results.

Grafting can be done on any tree?

There is a number of trees on which grafting can be done:. fruit trees ornamental trees and some of the coniferous trees. Nevertheless, not all trees eligible to be grafted because in grafting process there are compatibility between rootstock and scion. Tree species vary and individual attention should be taken especially in the compatibility tests of the two trees before grafting.

Describe the advantages and disadvantages of grafting.

Advantages of Tree Grafting:

Genetic Improvement: For instance, grafting makes it possible to grow trees containing characteristics from different trees varieties. The cross breeding can lead to increase in disease tolerance, quality of fruits and other growth parameters.

Faster Maturity: By grafting young trees you are able to mature and get fruit-bearing trees more quickly as compared with growing from seed.

Uniformity: This is because grafted trees act as standardized trees in several aspects; size, color of the fruit or taste in this case is fairly determined.

Propagation: Grafting enables the production of trees that are otherwise very hard to produce from seed leading to more availability of specific or desired cultivars.

Disadvantages of Tree Grafting:

Compatibility Issues: Some tree species are not suited for grafting due to non-compatible scion and rootstock and this results in formation of poor graft unions with possibility of tree failure.

Risk of Disease Transfer: Through grafting, diseases which maybe present in the rootstock may be transmitted to the scion or the diseases that are possibly in the scion can be transferred to the rootstock if a proper precaution is not observed.

Labor-Intensive: Grafting is tedious and can prove to be time-consuming hence may not be suitable for amateur cultivators or producers.

All in all, tree grafting is a very beneficial process and few people will not consider it when it is a possibility, yet at the same time it has some difficulties and implications that have to be taken into account before grafting trees.

Describe any one method of grafting that you know.

Whip and Tongue Grafting

Description: Whip and tongue grafting is among the most favorite techniques used in grafting of fruit trees and ornamental plants. This technique concerns the joining of scion with matching cuts so that it heals and fuses quickly more so with the use of glue.

Process:

  1. Prepare the Scion and Rootstock: Choose healthy scion and rootstock with comparable diameter. Both should be cut at a diagonal position with the aim of producing a long inclined plane.
  2. Make Matching Cuts: On the scion and rootstock make a matching tongue cut by making a vertical cut to the center of the slopping surface in order to produce a tongue.
  3. Join the Scion and Rootstock: Place the tongue of the scion into the slit of the tongue cut of the rootstock so that there is good and neat fit to ensure maximum contact.
  4. Secure the Graft: Secure the scion and rootstock together tightly, you may use grafting tape, or rubber bands among other means.
  5. Protect the Graft: This should be done by applying grafting wax or sealant all over the graft union in order to prevent it from drying up or being attacked by diseases.
  6. Monitor and Care for the Graft: Allow the grafted plant to grow in the right environmental conditions so as to check on successful grafted.

It is quite popular among horticulturist and gardeners in the planting of certain fruits tree, ornamental trees or anything that needs to be planted correctly.
