Hello people of nature and agriculture community of steemit, today I will be participating on @lhorgic contest titled
Crop or Livestock Farming? What's your choice?
What kind of farming do you practice?, Be sure to be detailed and precise. |
---|
Everyone has their type and choice of farming but I practice crop farming. This farming allows people to grow crops of their choice either for the purpose of selling or for food purpose.
And also in my own dimensions of farming I do plant cassava which is use in making flour, garri and other things which can be created using cassava. Also I grow yams , maize and even some vegetables like pumpkin.
• Why do you prefer this kind of farming to the other? |
---|
This kind of farming has less type of stress and it also help prople to grow more crops on a particular place . Also I prefer this kind of farming because the plants which are grown are affected with lesser crop disease
This is because the rate of which plants affect disease is low compared to the way animals get affected. Because animals can get infected to disease by drinking water that is contaminated but water that is dirty or contaminated cannot harm a crop or plant . Also I prefer crop farming because it has low stress of taking ng care of the plants because you do not have to find food for them rather if there is adequate rainfall and sunshine with hoo weather conditions your plants will grow well.
• What has been your biggest challenge in this area since you began this aspect of farming? |
---|
The only big challenge which I face every year is grass . This has been one of the issues that sometimes discourage a person to stop farming because during the raining season period grasses grow faster than expected. And most times the chemicals or weed killers are expensive.
•Can you share useful tips with your readers on how to be successful in this area of farming, whether crop or livestock. |
---|
If you want to be successful in crop farming you should consider this few things am about to share
Piece of land to farm. Before starting this type of farming you should consider having a piece of land to farm on and also it must be fertilized. How you know a piece of land is fertilized is that you ask from people who farm closer to that land or you can check by your self , if the land has many leaves and also there are grasses it means that they have not planted on the farm for a while which means it will still have some fertility in it.
Type of soil to plant on. Many people still don't know that it is only on a good or fertile loamy soil that you can plant crops and enjoy them. That is you cannot plant crops on a Sandy soil or on a clay soil and expect a rich harvest. Instead it will yield poor harvest.
Type of crop to plant. You should consider the type of crop which you see that people plant around there that yield rich harvest and also try that type . But if you wish you can also add a different type of crop because not all soil are the same.
Management of farmland
You must learn how to manage your farmland in order to be successful. What am saying in essence is that you must know when to weed the farm, when to plant , and also when to harvest.
This are the few things I think a person can add to his or her little knowledge and start crop farming.
Thanks for reading my post I will now like to call on @mikitaly @lhorgic @suboohi @chiagoziee @saintpaul17 and @bonaventure24 to also take part in this contest.
