One of my great film frustrations is that it looks unlikely for Ridley Scott to ever complete the Alien prequel-storyline, despite the deliciously ominous open ending of Alien: Covenant (2017).

I am truly excited about Noah Hawley’s announced TV Series – which will also take place before the events of Scott’s first Alien film – and Fede Alvarez’s upcoming Alien: Romulus (2024), but it makes me sad that we will probably never see a satisfying conclusion to the fascinating ideas that were initiated in Prometheus (2012) and A:C.

The suggestion that the Xenomorphs originated from a weaponized virus, is eerily prescient considering the events of late. To be clear – I obviously do not believe that COVID-19 is a biological weapon deployed by an omnipotent entity seeking total control over creation and destruction, but the fact that Prometheus and A:C carried this exact storyline years before the current pandemic is, if nothing else, quite startling.

Still, despite being astutely topical, I am not holding my breath for these awesome chapters in The Book of Alien to be concluded anytime soon or at all. Then again – it is also highly unlikely that Disney would allow a beloved franchise to just die, so who knows…

As fate would have it, I am in Bangkok at the moment. True fans of the Xenomorph Cinematic Universe (XCU™) will know that David Giler – the producer of all Alien films and spin-offs – spent the twilight of his life here. Therefore, tomorrow I will visit a place of worship and pray to The Engineers for at least one more Scott-directed prequel!
