After leaving the region of Galilee where Jesus performed many miracles and gave the Sermon on the Mount, the divine teacher went to the city of Jerusalem and on his spiritual journey he taught with great wisdom to all the multitude that followed him with curiosity, and among his most important teachings during his journey were the parable of the good Samaritan, the parable of the lamp, the commandment of Love, and the Lord's Prayer.
But Lord Jesus, while he was teaching about the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of the divine perfections, noticed that his disciples and followers were more concerned about the problems of everyday life than about spiritual matters, and so Jesus exhorted them to be faithful and to live vigilantly with an important teaching.
And so Jesus metaphorically gave them a parable related to the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity), that is, to the good soil that makes faith bear fruit according to the parable of the sower, with these wise words: "Be ready and keep your lamps burning just like those servants who wait up for their master to return from a wedding feast. As soon as he comes and knocks, they open the door for him" Luke 12:35-36.
Jesus knew that he would not be in the world for much longer, and that his followers and disciples should preach the Kingdom of God without his physical presence, so he warned them about the importance of living prepared for the day of judgment, because those who are unprepared for unforeseen events always have a bad time. It was then that Jesus concluded his explanation with a beautiful beatitude, thus remembering what was taught in the Sermon on the Mount: "Servants are fortunate if their master finds them awake and ready when he comes!" Luke 12:37. Jesus ultimately reflected on the importance of serving God and his word, because true happiness belongs to those who keep the lamp of faith and hope alive.
