Trend following? Does it really work?!

In most cases trend following doesn't actually work, it seems easy enough and it looks like it works when looking back at old charts.

In real time however, it is much messier and doesn't usually work in the long run.

You can have a string of winning trades for a bit which is then followed by a ton of fake-outs that eventually eats up any gains you had during the bull market.

Anyone telling you they will only buy when the price is above X moving average probably hasn't been doing what they have been doing for long and been profitable at it.

Reversion to the mean trading is pretty much the only type of trading that can be done profitably over the long run.
