In Bangladesh a girl’s life is full of pressure from society and her family. Many girls grow up listening to things like "Girls should always stay calm and polite." Show emotions is a weakness according to these ideas. And over time, we begin to believe sharing our sadness or frustration means we’re not strong enough. But this isn’t true at all.

I’ve encountered this problem in my own life too. At one time I was preparing to go through a great change and the weight of my family’s expectations was just too much. I was also hopeless about many things. I looked strong at home and outside I made an effort to be happy. I was crying inside alone, so it made me tired. Somebody tried to change my thinking one day, a close friend. “Telling others how you feel doesn’t make you weak. It makes you strong.” Her words gave me courage. I then spoke to my family the following day regarding what I was feeling. I felt weird when I shared, but once I did, it was like some sort of big thing was lifted off my shoulders. I noticed that the stuff you hide hurts you, but the stuff you express makes you feel lighter and happier.

In Bangladesh, a lot of girls don't make their struggles known because they don’t want people to think they’re weird. It only grows the pain when you just keep everything inside. A lot helps talking to family, friends, or even a counselor. Sharing our problems always helps, because others usually give advice or support that makes life easier.

Keeping feelings hidden can hurt us mentally and physically. All this can lead to stress, anxiety, or cause health problems such as not sleeping well or stomach aches. If your feeling upset don’t let fear prevent you from sharing your feelings. It’s important for your mental and physical health. Expressing yourself is your right.

Whatever you feel your family or society will never understand, your matter. You have to be your own best friend, love yourself and take care of yourself. But it’s scary sometimes to put things out there in your heart but when you do you will be stronger than ever.

Share Your Feelings

I’d tell you this, if you’re experiencing a rough time - don’t bottle your feelings up. Talk to someone you trust. You’ll feel lighter in your heart and will be further at peace. Sharing your emotions doesn’t mean you’re doing yourself harm, it means you’re gaining strength.
