800,000. That's how many stray dogs there are in Thailand alone

The above number is just an estimate and no, I don't have any idea how they come up with that number. It's probably just based on the number in one particular area and then multiplied by the total landmass. Regardless of how they come up with it, if you live here it is pretty easy to believe that it is at least that high considering that no matter where you go in this country, you are going to encounter stray dogs everywhere.

There are organizations like ours in many places throughout Thailand but we have worked most closely with Lanta Animal Welfare and mirrored our operations after their own. They have been around at least twice as long as we have and they are one of the most respected animal welfare operations in the country. Surpassed only by, perhaps, the Soi Dog Foundation.

When Lanta Animal Welfare got started they had a big job to do because Lanta is a relatively massive island but it does have one benefit and that is that even to this day, there is no single bridge that connects it to the mainland. The bridge system goes halfway but then it is necessary to take a ferry in order to complete the journey.

This means that is is very unlikely that any new dogs will be introduced to the island and this makes it a perfect location for a sterilization operation in order to control population.

Someone visiting Lanta or Krabi for that matter might think that it doesn't seem like there are sterilization initiatives but that simply isn't true. The fact of the matter is that since we receive zero government support that our abilities to operate are determined entirely by our donors and volunteers. While there are veterinarians and other support groups that are happy to donate their time the fact of the matter is that the things we do are not free, and therefore we can't do nearly as much of it as we would like to.

in our 5 years of operation we have noticed the change that we have made in dogs' lives though, and we have accomplished a lot of reduction of suffering which was our objective all along.

We will never stop. We will stay till the job's done and since we have already seen the darkest times during Covid where all of our volunteers were unable to get here and our donations nearly completely dried up. We weathered that storm and look forward to the future!
