The Britannia silver coin is a British coin first minted in 1997 by the Royal Mint. It was initially made of .958 fine silver but has always maintained a face value of £2. From 1997 to 2012 the coin weighed 32.45g as more silver was needed to make up that ounce, but since 2013 the coins have contained .999 fine silver and have weighed 31.21g. When purchasing coins on the secondhand market keeping these weights in mind can help determine if the coin is genuine silver or anothe metal all together.

Britannia (/brɪˈtæniə/) is the national personification of Britain as a helmeted female warrior holding a trident and shield.[1] An image first used in classical antiquity, the Latin Britannia was the name variously applied to the British Isles, Great Britain, and the Roman province of Britain during the Roman Empire.

So it is only fitting that the UK "flagship" bullion coin is named after the female personification of Britain, Britannia. The design of the coin features a portrait of Britannia on the reverse and the current monarch's portrait on the obverse. It is intended for both investment and as a collector's item. The coin has been minted annually since its introduction, with some changes to its design over time.

There have been many changes to the design of the coin throughout the years. The older coins, as expected, fetch the most on the secondary markets because they are just far more pleasing to the eye than the modern "boring" design used annually now. The Traditional or Classic Britannia has been used on all silver bullion coins since 2012 and I feel that this has been a cop-out by the mint and a direct attempt to save money and maximise profits by not having to pay for a fresh new design every year.

With that said, im torn between the 2008 and 2011 design for my favourite. Which one tops your list?
