Throughout the month of August, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
History was made on 16 August 1858 when Queen Victoria sent the first transatlantic telegram to the President of the United States, James Buchanan. It was a new era in global communication and a gesture of friendship and collaboration between the two nations.
The communication wasn’t quite instantaneous though, the message took 16 hours to travel from one continent to the other.
The 1858 gold sovereign is the eleventh date for the Queen Victoria "second head" shield sovereign. This second type of Victoria sovereign was issued from 1848 to 1872, has a slightly larger head in lower relief, and the reverse legends are repositioned.

For a coin with some considerable age, some 163yrs in fact, they can be picked up pretty cheap on the secondary market. Obviously, if you wanted coins of immaculate condition, you need to pay a bit more, but for your average (fine) sovereign, a price in the ball park of just £400 is expected.
I highly encourage eveyone to own atleast one gold sovereign in their lifetime. I guarantee that omce you start woth one, youll want to continue to invest in these amazing little gold coins.
