How does food security affect public health?

Food is an item without which none of us can even think of living. Yet we should not consume food without thinking. Such food consumption has a profound impact on public health and has a profound effect on physical, mental and social well-being. Here I am mentioning how food affects public health: -

  • Lack of adequate and nutritious food can lead to malnutrition.
  • Uncontrolled food consumption leads to long-term diseases like physical illness, diabetes.
  • Shortage of food supply often creates depression and at some point, one has to face mental health problems.
  • In children, food insecurity can hinder their development.
  • Due to malnutrition and unhealthy food consumption, diseases like diarrhea can arise.
  • Food insecurity during pregnancy increases the possibility of low-birth-weight babies.
  • Food insecurity increases social inequality.

What role do government policies play in food security?

The government plays an important role in ensuring food security. Food security can be ensured by following government policies. The steps taken by the government to ensure food security are: -

  • Under this policy, the government provides subsidies to farmers.
  • It conducts necessary research in agricultural production.
  • The government takes various steps to prevent land and water degradation.
  • It creates a wage structure to ensure that everyone gets food. It creates a special commission so that traders do not make excessive profits and everyone can get food at the right price.
  • It ensures the quality of food under the Fortification Program.
  • It ensures food safety standards.
  • It makes arrangements for food distribution to everyone in emergency situations.
In this way, the government ensures food security through many more policies.

How does climate change threaten food security?

Climate change brings about changes in the food system in four dimensions. These are: -
Due to changing rainfall, extreme droughts and extreme floods can occur. This change in climate affects food security.
Soil erosion and soil in fertileness affect land production, resulting in an impact on food security.

Food accessibility: -

  • Due to climate change, food production decreases. Food prices increase. And it affects food security.
  • Limited human productivity and insufficiency of resources create food crises.
  • Due to climate crises, people would leave one area and move to another. This migration also created food problems.
  • High carbon dioxide levels reduce the nutrition of crops. Food lacks adequate nutrients and affects us

Food stability: -

  • Food shortages can occur for various reasons. For example: - Bananas, cyclones, hurricanes, etc. cause food shortages. This shortage affects our food.
  • Due to irregular weather, crop production is hampered. Which affects us.
  • If we cannot produce crops in accordance with the climate, it affects us.

How do cultural factors influence food choices?

Cultural factors significantly influence food choices, preferences, eating habits and attitudes towards food. These factors are deeply rooted in traditions, beliefs and social norms. These vary between communities and individuals. Here are some examples. For example:-
