Assalamu Alaikum,
Hello everyone,
I am @selina1
From #Bangladesh
Starting by wishing good health to all steemit friends. Come to Nature and Agriculture Community to participate in a great contest on agriculture. I will participate in this contest with my experience today. So let's get started.
What type of farming do you practice?, be sure to be detailed and specific.
I am a citizen of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a major agricultural country. Various types of agriculture are produced in six seasons of our country. However, different regions are known for different agricultural productivity depending on the climate. Our region is best for producing rice and various vegetables. I am a housewife so I grow vegetables in the empty spaces of my house. Besides, paddy is cultivated twice in the beginning of the year in the month of Baisakh and in the month of Agrahayan. That is, we cultivate paddy every six months.
Paddy cultivation has not yet started in our region but the process to cultivate paddy has started. This is what most of the people in our region are doing now. Vegetable farming can be done in a simple way and it can meet the needs of the family as well as earn money by selling the vegetables.
I am growing vegetables around my house like Radish, Date, Coriander, Eggplant, Chilli and Papaya etc. Currently the prices of vegetables are high in the market and most of the vegetables available in the market are adulterated. I get which is very beneficial for my body.
Besides, paddy is our main crop. The main food of Bengalis is rice. Therefore, the main economic crop of our country is paddy. Through the cultivation of this paddy, employment is provided in our area. We grow paddy to meet our family's food needs and also get more profit by selling it.
Why do you prefer this type of farming to others?
Due to the soil type and natural climate in our region, I usually prefer to grow rice and various vegetables.
Not all crops grow in all soils or in all weather conditions. Due to this, the farmer has to face loss many times. If we grow rice and various vegetables in our region, the farmer can easily bring it home and cultivate the crops as expected.
Soil type as well as irrigation system is required to grow crops. The last system is in place where I grow crops.
Farmers can easily grow vegetable gardens or vegetables in small empty spaces around the house with little cost.
Cultivation of crops is not enough, it needs to be taken care of. Since I am a housewife and have vegetable garden around the house so I can take care of the vegetables myself. So I have gardened vegetables in the empty spaces around the house.
The farmer does not have to face much loss in rice and vegetable cultivation due to weather changes and the farmer can easily understand when to apply fertilizers or pesticides in these crops.
As the soil and climate of our region is very good, the attack of insects is less if we cultivate rice or vegetables. Even if insects attack, it is possible to reduce the attack of insects very quickly with advice from the agriculture office. Also, seasonal vegetables can be cultivated throughout the year.
On the other hand, if you keep domestic animals, you have to provide them with services throughout the year and if you don't understand their diseases, they can die at any time. To me, raising domestic animals seems like more work. According to the rules, the domestic animals have to be taken care of all the time, sometimes the farmer cannot do it. In addition, the cost of raising domesticated animals is also high.
So for me crop farming is better than livestock farm.
What has been your biggest challenge in this area since you started this side of farming?
As I said earlier in our region we have twice a year tillage and the main cultivable crops of the farmers in our region are paddy and vegetables. Although there is no such challenge in vegetable gardening, farmers have to face various challenges in rice cultivation. They are given below
Extreme floods have been occurring in our region for the last few years, due to which the farmer's paddy fields get flooded and the farmer has to suffer huge losses.
Besides, during extreme drought, irrigation becomes difficult at times. It is not always possible for the farmer to arrange water.
When excess is created, various insects attack, due to which rice is damaged a lot.
Heavy rain storms and cyclones pose a major threat to rice cultivation. Besides, at present market system and increasing cost of rice cultivation, the farmer cannot grow rice according to his expectations. That is, the farmer has to spend a lot for rice cultivation.
Farmers in our region are not yet able to fully use digital technology to cultivate crops. Nowadays, farmers must use digital technology to be profitable in crop cultivation. Which still many farmers are ignorant about.
These challenges are usually faced by us in the field of crop cultivation.
Can you share useful tips about farming, crops or livestock with your readers?
Farmers have to consider various aspects in crop cultivation. I am giving some useful tips below.
The farmer has to plan in advance what kind of crops he will grow on his land by understanding the type of soil, irrigation system, weather etc.
The farmer should have an idea about the crops he will grow and what insects will attack him in the cultivation and if the insects attack, he should use pesticides very quickly.
Farmers should know the use of digital technology in their crop cultivation. In this case the farmer can benefit more.
At present extreme floods and droughts, various insects are becoming major obstacles to agriculture. So the farmer should cultivate the crop with advice from the Agriculture Department or agronomist.
