Your website is the gateway for all of your local customers.

So, if you don’t have a local presence, how can you expect to attract locals to your site?

To start your local business off on the right foot, you need to establish yourself locally.

If you’re a web designer, local business owners will need to find you.

Here are some things to look out for to make sure your website shows up in search results in your local area.

STEP 1: Optimize Your Location Information & Keywords

It doesn’t matter if you’re a web design studio or a restaurant – if you want to rank higher in local searches, you need to make sure that your location information and keywords are optimized.

In Google My Business, you can select the city where you want to appear. If you don’t know which city to pick, you can pick the closest city to your location and see how it performs.

If you don’t want to do that, you can choose “Other” and enter the city where you want to appear.

If you choose “Other,” you have two options. You can either use the “City, State” format or “Country” format.

If you use the “City, State” format, Google will list the city first and then the state. For example, a web design studio in San Francisco may appear on the search results as “San Francisco California” or “San Francisco.”

While the latter option will appear last in the local pack, it’s actually an advantage because Google’s algorithm doesn’t favor locations that appear earlier. However, if you have a business in San Francisco that appears on page one in both the United States and Canada, Google may display the company's location as “San Francisco.”

STEP 2: Select Your Business Category

This is probably the most important part of setting up a local business website. If you’re running a clothing store, you can’t just type in “Clothing.” If you’re selling mobile phones, there are many categories that you might want to go with.

Choosing the right category allows your customers to discover you without having to navigate around your website.

STEP 3: Set Up Google My Business

This is probably the easiest step – but the one that often gets skipped.

Google has taken the effort to optimize the listings for every category. By setting up a listing in Google My Business, you’ll be able to connect your web presence with your local business information.

If you don’t want to set up your own Google My Business account, you can also use a third party service such as Hello Bar, Localeze, or Google My Business Manager.

After you’ve set up your account, you’ll be able to manage all
