Mr G E Mackenney painted this unusual snail sign in 1977. This is the original design submitted by the artist. It is now displayed outside the pub here in Wraysbury.
The sign features what is certainly the oldest and most rewarding deed of perseverance. That of the humble snail making its way towards the Ark of Noah.
This would provide Mr Snail with salvation against the coming Flood. Thereby it will perpetuate its species and it will continue to plague the lives of numerous generations of gardeners. It will carry on devouring seedlings and tender shoots of growing flowers, vegetables and fruits day and night.
