Grafting is defined as a horticulture procedure that involves the union of certain parts of two plants that of the higher plant called scion and of the lower plant known as rootstock. It enables the producer or breeder to introduce some desirable qualities including disease resistance or better quality of fruit as may be desired. In a successful grafting, vascular cambium tissues should be properly oriented, and this is commonly done during dormancy in the winter or early spring.

There are different procedures that are practiced in the grafting process depending on the trees to be grafted, these are cleft grafting and bud grafting among others. Resultantly, it not only increases the growth rates but also avails the opportunity for growing one or more varieties on the same tree.
