HYMN OF LOVE
One day, while walking
As a little child
In the outskirts
Of Nazareth,
In the company
Of Saint Joseph,
The good Jesus,
The Divine Child.
Lo and behold,
He saw in a thorn bush
A nightingale,
Chirping nervously,
Flustered and fluttering,
Caught in the gaze
Of a serpent,
With eyes aglow,
As radiant as the sun,
And as piercing
As a diamond,
It had entranced,
It had bewitched
The helpless bird.
Jesus, moved
By the plight
Of the poor little creature,
Left the path,
Ran quickly,
Broke the spell,
The serpent fled.
And suddenly,
The poor bird,
Safe and joyful,
Burst into song—
So sweetly wrought,
Or rather a lament
So full of sobs,
So steeped
In gratitude,
In pure joy,
In unrestrained emotion,
In vehemence,
In expression,
In cadence—
That it moved
The very heart!
Jesus continued
His walk,
And the little bird,
Still singing,
Followed Him along.
Now and then,
It would fly ahead
To perch nearby,
And as soon as it settled,
It would sing anew,
Without pause or repetition,
Each note heightened,
Each melody sweeter!
Thus it went,
Following Him
So faithfully,
That night and day,
On a palm tree
Near the home
Where Our Lord lived
As a child
(It was a certainty),
The poor bird
Always perched,
Singing its tender
And gentle hymn
Of love
To the Savior!
