Greetings teachers and students!
Here is the presentation of my season 22 week1 homework post which has to with everything about carpal tunnel syndrome
What's carpal tunnel syndrome? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is when swelling in the wrist compresses the median nerve, causing numbness, weakness, or tingling, this condition brings increased pressure on the median nerve at the wrist, this disease tackles the fingers especially the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
Another name for carpal tunnel syndrome is (median nerve compression) it mostly happens when something irritates the median nerve in your wrist.
It is not genetically inherited though it occurs for multiple reasons.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by pressure on the median nerve. The median nerve runs from the forearm through a passageway the carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway surrounded by bones and ligaments on the palm side of the hand. When the median nerve is compressed signs like numbness, weakness, and tingling will present.
But there are other factors that could trigger carpal tunnel syndrome which are:
• Extending or flexing the wrist for long periods of time.
• Rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions that cause inflammation in the joints.
• Frequent, repetitive movements with the hands.
• Hormonal or metabolic changes (for example, menopause, pregnancy or thyroid imbalance)
Symptoms may require medical diagnosis but there are key symptoms which are:
• numbness in the hand
• tingling in the hand
• weakness in the hand
• pain in the hand
With this symptoms present the affected hand may experience the following:
• Weakness when gripping objects with one or both hands.
• Pain or numbness in one or both hands.
• Pins and needles" feeling in the fingers.
• Swollen feeling in the fingers.
•Burning or tingling in the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers.
1 Acute carpal tunnel syndrome. This symptoms often present due to sudden trauma or injury and will last for days or extend to week.
2 Chronic carpal tunnel syndrome. In this case the its show that the initial symptom was not attended to and due to repetitive use of the affected areas this time the symptoms might last up to weeks or months.
3 primary carpal tunnel syndrome. The cause is mostly unknown although some light symptoms may present.
4 Secondary carpal tunnel syndrome. chances of developing CTS include broken or dislocation of wrist bones, pregnancy, diabetes, thyroid problems, menopause and obesity.
Repetitive and forceful grasping with the hands or repetitive bending of the wrist may also contribute.
Stage 1: Intermittent symptoms that may only occur during certain activities or upon waking in the morning.
Stage 2: Consistent symptoms that come and go during the day and pain that may be severe enough to disturb sleep.
Stage 3: Constant symptoms as well as weakness or muscle loss in the thumb.
How would you diagnose a carpal tunnel syndrome? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?
• Physical exam. Most cases of carpal tunnel syndrome can be diagnosed through a physical exam by the doctor also the patient giving good details of explanation about the symptoms.
• Laboratory tests and x-rays.
• In some cases, your doctor may order laboratory tests and x-rays.
• Tests using electric signals.
Carpal compression test is performed by holding the patients wrist in slight flexion and directly compressing the median nerve by applying pressure to the proximal wrist crease for 30 seconds.
A positive result occurs if patient develops pain, paresthesia, or numbness in median nerve distribution
patients with typical symptoms and signs of carpal tunnel syndrome do not need additional testing.
In an advanced case a Median nerve ultrasound is used as a screening tool in carpal tunnel syndrome: correlation of cross-sectional area measures with electrodiagnostic abnormality.
Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practicing preferably gifs or videos.
Arm prayer stretch
This exercise is performed to increase the length of a shortened muscles for pain compensation.
Median Nerve Glide
With my thumb bend beneath my finger i firmly tightened my fist and rotated my wrist up and down.
This exercise subsides symptoms are treat the cause automatically improving the nerve passage.
Wrist Rotation
This exercise reduces stiffness, improve join mobility and alleviate symptoms.
Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient.
This exercise can be of great help to people with minor or moderate case, it can as well improve their symptoms and relief pain.
For those that are not suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome this exercise can aswell benefit them because it will prevent any future occurrence.
I will love to invite @alysaa @dequeen @blessedbee to participate in this contest thank you.
