A computer network is a sophisticated system designed to facilitate communication and resource sharing among multiple devices, such as computers, servers, printers, and more. It operates on the basis of interconnected nodes, which exchange data through various physical or wireless links. The arrangement of these nodes, known as the network topology, can take different forms, including bus, star, ring, mesh, or hybrid configurations. Central to the functioning of a network are protocols, which establish rules for data transmission and reception, ensuring effective communication between devices.

The OSI model provides a conceptual framework for understanding these protocols, dividing network functionality into seven layers. Additionally, networking devices such as routers, switches, and access points manage traffic and facilitate connectivity within the network. Security measures, including firewalls and encryption, safeguard data integrity and privacy. Different types of networks, such as LANs, WANs, and VPNs, cater to diverse geographical scopes and purposes. Overall, computer networks are essential infrastructures underpinning modern communication, enabling seamless interactions and collaborations across the digital landscape.

Computer networks operate by facilitating communication between interconnected devices through data transmission. When a device wishes to send data, it breaks it into packets, each containing addressing information and a portion of the data. These packets traverse the network via routers and switches, guided by routing protocols, and travel through wired or wireless transmission mediums. Upon reaching their destination, the packets are reassembled, and the data is processed by the receiving device. Protocols like TCP ensure reliable delivery and error correction. Network administrators oversee network management, configuring devices, troubleshooting issues, and implementing security measures. As the network grows, it can be scaled up or expanded to accommodate increased traffic. In essence, computer networks form the backbone of modern communication, enabling seamless data exchange and collaboration across diverse devices and locations.
