Japanese privet, whose scientific name is ligustrum japonicum, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree of the oleaceae (olive) family native to East Asia.

The tree is dense and upright, tolerates both drought and heavy pruning, and can grow in a variety of soil conditions.

It has glossy, dark green leaves that grow opposite, evergreen, whole, and coriaceous.

Japanese privets are planted around buildings and pruned into "giant meatballs" or small tree shapes.
