The camphor tree, scientifically known as cinnamomum camphora, is a persistent and hardy species with an interesting history and cultural identity, both as a weed and as a sacred tree.

The tree is striking at first glance, but as an important spiritual and symbolic tree, it has long cultural and historical ties to Japanese religious traditions.

One example is the 400-500 year old camphor tree at the Koyasu Kannon temple, a small Buddhist temple in Sasebo, Nagasaki, which is important not only for religious purposes, but also for traditional medicine.
