Upon dubious claims of security, Sony has abruptly reversed its policy regarding the optional linking of accounts to the PSN, therefore making it mandatory. What is, sorry was, one of the best games of 2024 with a great story behind it coupled with a passionate team and players crazy about the evolving online campaigns, may just have been destroyed because of hard to understand reasons.

Sony, who holds rights over the franchise, could just have sitback and enjoyed the seemingly unlimited mountains of gold it was getting them, they have instead opted to impose a requirement on millions of players to either create or link their game accounts to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account. This requirement not only estranges a significant portion of the player base who may not have access to PSN due to regional restrictions but also introduces unnecessary hurdles for those who prefer to keep their gaming accounts separate.

But starting from Sony's claim, that this is all about security, many look at this with doubtfull eyes and confused expressions as the company is famous for being regularly hacked. On a large scale. What could be then Sony's true motives? It could be that they want to artificially inflate the number of their users for marketing purposes and to convince investors, but considering that Helldivers 2 was basically a gigantic passive income who required almost no work at all from their part, it doesn't seem to make much sense.

Regardless of the rationale behind the decision, this is very disappointing for the players and the team at Helldivers. Wether it is legal or not remains to be seen, but a blowback against Sony is probable come in the next few weeks.
