Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, located on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, covers an area of 159 square kilometers and is a vital natural reserve that protects the watershed supplying water to the capital city. It was officially established as a national park in 2002 by merging the Shivapuri and Nagarjun forest reserves.

The park is characterized by dense forests, diverse wildlife, and a variety of ecosystems, ranging from subtropical to temperate climates. The altitude in the park ranges from 1,366 meters to 2,732 meters at Shivapuri Peak, the second-highest hill surrounding the Kathmandu Valley.

Flora and Fauna

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is rich in biodiversity. The forests are dominated by oak, rhododendron, and pine trees, and they provide a habitat for a wide range of wildlife. Some notable animals include Himalayan black bears, leopards, barking deer, wild boar, and over 300 species of birds, making the park an excellent destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. Additionally, the park is home to various species of butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians.

Hiking and Trekking

The park is a popular spot for hiking and trekking, offering scenic trails that pass through serene forests, hills, and streams. The most popular trail leads to Shivapuri Peak, from which visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas, including peaks like Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Dorje Lakpa. Another notable hiking route is the one leading to the Nagi Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, which offers a peaceful retreat and meditation center.

Cultural and Religious Significance

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park holds cultural and religious importance as well. The park contains several sacred sites, including Baghdwar, the source of the holy Bagmati River, and the Vishnu temple at Budhanilkantha, a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus.

Accessibility

The park is easily accessible from Kathmandu, located just a few kilometers from the city center. Visitors can enter the park through various entry points, such as Budhanilkantha in the east and Balaju in the west for the Nagarjun forest section.

This national park is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a retreat for those seeking tranquility and spiritual rejuvenation amidst natural beauty.
