Greetings and good day ladies and gentlemen, how are you all doing today? I hope you are really enjoying this beautiful moments of September, by the way I'm @john247 from #Nigeria it's all my pleasure having you in this amazing and practical contest titled "Grafting of trees" organized by @mostofajaman here in #Nature&Agriculture community.
Before I proceed to the contest hints and questions I will like to share some brief meaning and definition on what grafting of trees actually meant, Grafting of trees can be defined according to Britannica website as the act of placing a portion of one plant (bud or scion) into or on a stem, root, or branch of another (stock) in such a way that a union will be formed and the partners will continue to grow.
What is grafting, Have you seen or done grafting?
Grafting in my own understanding is the process of attaching a branch of tree into one healthy tree so that they appear to grow as a single plant and allows us to preserve and extend the life of fruiting trees that are of valuable to us.
Talking about seen or done grafting before I will say have not done before but I have seen where they are doing it, the first time saw when they were doing I taught it was a childs play because it looks like what a child does for fun but with time I came to realize that value and it importance of grafting
Grafting can be done on any tree?
I don't think if grafting can be done on any type of tree because grafting involves the attachment of vascular tissues together with the scion and rootstock, plants lacking vascular cambium, that's to say that plant with less or no vascular tissue cannot normally be grafted, also to determine with types of trees that can be grafted together, it is best to note that only closely related plants that can be join together, it is also possible to graft different fruits of the same genus.
Describe the advantages and disadvantages of grafting.
Below I will be listing down the advantages and disadvantages of grafting, which I first start with the advantages.
Advantages of Grafting.
- It gives us the opportunity to preserve and extend the life of fruiting trees that are of valuable to us.
- Grafting supports the physical and physiological union of two different plants for economic advantage.
- Grafting Increase the growth rate of seedlings and as well helps produce certain plant forms.
Disadvantages of Grafting.
- The plants selected for the grafting must be always close relative just like I said earlier that it determines the types of trees that can be grafted together this makes grafting difficult and stressful.
- The number of plants that are produced by the grafting process is always limited.
- the stem diameter of the rootstock and scion must be similar otherwise it the grafting process will be in vain.
Describe any one method of grafting that you know.
That are different methods of grafting which I will list them down and as well describe and share with you all the one I know most.,
- Inlay grafting methods is a graft in which the scion is matched into a place in the stock from which a piece of corresponding bark has been removed.
- four-flap grafting, The four-flap graft allows much cambium contact between the scion and the stock.
- other methods of grafting includes whip grafting and cleft grafting.
I have come to the end of this contest which I will like to start by appreciatig the leadership of this community and as well the members and moderators and also I will be inviting some of my steemians colleagues @radjasalman @josepha @pandora2010 to take part in this contest thanks.
