One of the big three gaps that frequently holds a senior leader from achieving the most important leadership objectives that they have. it's a gap in effective communication when leaders are more effective communicators they're more likely to be effective change agents.
Leaders are more likely to seek out different views and perspectives to improve their decision-making and most importantly they are likely to motivate and inspire others to engage people around a vision and strategy.
◉ What role does active listening play in leadership?
Well, listening is an often overlooked and usually undervalued communication skill. It often doesn't look like anything's happening, but if you want to take your leadership seriously, then you have to work on your listening.
Because the higher up leaders go to any organization, the more time they spend listening.
In fact, executives spend twice as much time listening compared to the average employee. And emerging leaders spend more and more time listening as they move up the ladder in any kind of organization.
And people in all walks of life, whether they're in an organization or in their personal life, love great listeners.
Benefits of listening
But there are real important practical benefits to being a great listener. Leaders who listen well and deeply get to know their people better. They also can be more easily identifying the emerging problems that are taking place on the ground. They have more input about solutions that could be more effective to solve real problems. They also are really good if you use listening, you can resolve the problems before they get bigger.
And more importantly, most of us, we want to avoid hard conversations and difficult moments. If you can listen a little bit more deeply, you can avoid these hard talks because you're managing problems all along the way.
◉ How can a leader ensure clarity in their message?
Every team wants clarity but from a leaders perspective sometimes people ask for clarity and they mean different things so somebody might ask for clarity because they need more facts, somebody might ask for clarity because they want you to tell them what to do and some people ask the clarity because they feel what we needed have a detailed plan before we can move forward. So the job of a leader is to provide information but not instructions, to provide the information that they've got and to share that but then to work with the team to understand they see what clarity can they bring in.
◉ Why is non-verbal communication crucial for leaders?
In the 21st century environment we live in the biggest era of illusion of communication. In human history we're continuously involved in some form of communication activity but that does not mean that communication has occurred because for communication to truly occur. There must be understanding of meaning in the exchanges between people when leaders invest time in developing this including developing their leadership presence and understanding. The role of nonverbal body language and power verbal voice based communication together with different media technologies, then their chance of more effective leadership is there because effective leadership is supported by effective communication.
