Why Are People Quitting Their Jobs

gbenga -

I saw an article where Squarespace CEO mentioned that Gen-Z job seekers should be doing voluntary services and they should be doing it for long hours without pay. Well, after the COVID, a lot of people resigned in 2021 and they mentioned that they would be getting new jobs and new roles. We could credit that to the COVID pandemic because the world itself changes and even at the point, what made people Billionaires changed.

It wasn't like people only quit in 2021, they did in 2022, and 2023 while in some organizations, they were forced to relief them of their duties because they had to find a way to survive as a company and retrenching was the best. Even CEOs of companies with large paychecks like the CEOs of YouTube, Walgreens, BP, and so on also resigned.

I saw a survey where it was said that 3 in 5 workers want to quit their jobs and this quitting is as a result of millennials and Gen-Zs. Something I found when I was looking through media and data is that more people want to quit their jobs in recent time than in the past. When I checked for the reason, I realized that different people in different regions under different laws had different reasons.

For some it was because employers requested that they be vaccinated and they do not want to get vaccinated for Covid-19. Another reason was because they were tired of working 9 to 5, instead they want to work fewer hours.quit their Relocation was another reason why people wanted to quit their jobs, other reasons where low benefit and pay for work done, lack of flexibility in hours of working, family and children, staying too long on one job, and no opportunity to grow.

These reasons above aren't a new thing because people quit their jobs because of these things but the surge in recent years have increased and it looks like there is a reason. about a century ago, the fair labor act was passed and people worked 40 hours a week instead of 44 hours weekly and the 40 hours was agreed on so people can be more productive and have time to rest and this was a good idea at the time but about 80 years later, things have changed with technology becoming our best friend.

Technology has brought automation which wasn't available at the time of the 40 hour working bill, it has brought artificial intelligence, instant communication, the internet and the ability to exchange information. These things increased our productivity unlike in the past, and with that, more work can be done at lesser time but then people are still working the 40 hour weekly job especially for those on salary, even when they are more productive compared to the year 1940. Most people who complain say that pay hasn't been growing in relation to productivity.
