Crocheting a Simple Pouch - 17 September 2024

I was very interested in the crochet course which is being offered on Steemit. Here is the lesson and activities for week 2. As I I’ve already achieved that stage I’m looking forward to future lessons to see if I can join in.
The photo above shows you a very quick and simple pouch I crocheted for a friend yesterday. She was in a big hurry and asked me to make it for her and to also make a bow for the pouch.
I started by crocheting a long chain of 31 with some old yarn I wrote about here and a crochet hook size 3.5mm.
I used double crochet for 3 or 4 rows, but with the thin yarn it was taking ages and I decided to just improvise a few other taller stitches. I did rows using half trebles alternating with double crochet, and trebles. There's a difference in terminology between UK and US terms used. I found this video to clarify what I mean :
As I was alternating rows the rectangular shape became more 'interesting' to crochet in a hurry but, sadly, I went wrong somewhere and it became a bit narrower and an uneven shape. All this meant that I had lost a few stitches along the way :
This happened after I also tried another stitch which involves crocheting one double crochet and one chain. That was simple enough but then in the next row I couldn’t find my way very easily to do the double crochet stitches above some of the stitches below. I didn’t have enough time to go back and undo the work though. I persevered and finished the long piece and folded it in half to make like a square pouch.
I threaded some of the thin ribbon in and out of two treble stitches as seen below:
I sewed the sides really neatly by crocheting a double crochet joining the two halves and then making a chain (or two) and repeating the process.

When I finished the pouch clearly needed a form of closure and I found an old and repurposed bright orange zipper that clashed with the yarn colour. I sewed that by hand which was a very hard process; it's not perfect but it will do. I also managed to learn how to make a bow by following the instructions in this tutorial :
The video has some annoying background music but I muted it as I had to watch it more than a couple of times to understand what to do. The process itself was simple but as a first timer I found it a bit tricky to work on my left hand and tie a neat knot with only my right hand. I was very surprised when it worked.
I sewed the bow with matching thread and hope my friend likes it.
Thank you for reading !
