Introduction

Homework, assignments or home-fun. Whatever the name you choose to call, it is a task given to pupils/students to fulfil at the end of the day's or week's study. There's usually no fixed time for or when to give homework.

Homework can be given based on a treated topic at school, and it can also be on a topic not taught by the teacher. Is homework necessary for learning? And I say yes! Let's go into the contest questions.

Do you think homework helps you remember what you learned in school?

Yes, it does. I am a teacher. Before being a teacher, I was a student and will still be a student. Learning never stops. To answer the question, I want to liken it to a practical thing we do in class every day.

The number one reason for giving students homework is for the students to gain knowledge. When homework is given, it is expected that the student will go and read his/her books before answering the questions. At a point where the students read the notes, the level of his/her understanding is widened. He/she will have a better understanding of the subject or topic than it was in the class.

Secondly, the reason why I agree that homework helps students remember what they learn in school is that some students have short/low memory, they tend to forget so easily. For them to keep to date with what was taught, the homework will always be a good idea to make him/her remember what was taught in the class. Because he will read and remember all that was taught in the class before giving the answers to the task he/she was given.

Thirdly, homework helps the set of students who don't have the time to read their books. For those who find it difficult to read their books after they are being taught in class, homework is a good way of making them go back to open their books. This is possible because there's no way any student can do his/her homework without reading through it before attempting to find the answers to the questions. From experience of being a teacher, some students don't read their books after school but only attempt to read during examinations, which is not good practice.

On the other hand, for the topics not in class, the students who are given that topic stand a chance of learning something new. A new idea would be gained during and after the research given to write on.

How do you feel when you have a lot of homework?

Having a lot of homework can be exhausting, but it is worth it, because it means gaining a lot of ideas and remembering all that was taught for the day or week. No time homework is given that you won't refresh your memory.

Can you think of ways homework could be made more useful or enjoyable?

Home is already useful, we just need to spice it up a bit. So, I think homework should be fun and not boring. For instance, giving homework on practical topics and the things around us will spur critical thinking in students.

Another thing is that homework shouldn't be so voluminous, it should be simple and fun to carry out. As my children came home with a lot of work from school during the midterm break, it was fun for us to do it. My son will wake up and be willing to do them, but I choose to make them do two at a time.

The ones which needed critical thinking, we did that in the morning, and it was just fun for us. Homework shouldn't be punishment, it should be something the students will be happy to do and also learn from.
