The Debate (no.45); Homework: A necessity

destinedhanik -

INTRODUCTION

Good afternoon members of @Steem fashion & style, I'm @destinedhanik. I love this topic by @sahmie, maybe because I'm a teacher and I give homework and also experienced in it.

Homework, as the name goes, is a school work given after school hours to be taken home by the pupil or student to do. It is a set of school work given to students by their teachers to be completed at home.

Over the years, especially in the 19th and 20th century, homework given to pupils and students was always minimal, but in this 21st century, parents and students complain that homework is no more in a moderate form. So I'm here today to propose the motion that homework is necessary but should be given in a moderate form. I will be giving some points to justify my stand.

Homework helps in remembering what was learnt in school

The aim of homework is to help teachers determine how well the lessons were understood by the students. Homework helps students read further and continue what they learnt in school. A lot of parents argue that homework isn't necessary and should be given in moderation. I disagree that homework isn't necessary but I agree that it should be given in moderation, especially when given to toddlers whose duty is to play and sleep.

Imagine teaching a child, and not giving any homework. The child gets home, plays all evening and comes back to school the next day. A teacher asks the child a question on what was taught the day before and the child looks lost, it could be very frustrating for the teacher, so homework gives the child the opportunity to go through what was taught in school on his or her own and revise it, also knowing where he or she is weak in that topic.

How I feel when I have lots of homework

Depending on the subject, I have mixed emotions. I may feel sad, happy, frustrated or agitated when I'm given lots of homework especially with a deadline. If it's on a subject or course I like, I may feel relaxed knowing that I'll enjoy doing it. But if it's on a subject I do not like or do not understand, I'll feel apprehensive, anxious etc. One of the things I have realized makes students feel sad towards lots of homework is short deadline, not understanding the topic, the fear of the teacher, etc. Too much of homework can even make a student more confused and the student may end up allowing someone do the homework for him or her which defeats the purpose of the homework given. In a normal school day, the students dismiss from school at 4pm, so giving them much homework doesn't leave any room for rest.

Ways homework can be made more useful or enjoyable

There are ways homework can be made more enjoyable to students. It's all about giving them creative homework or asking then to apply their creativity.

•First of all, homework should be given in a moderate form and only after the children have been taught to their understanding.

• It should not be too tedious or too boring example a teacher giving a student homework to go and research on a topic and write a whole note of lesson on it.

• on subjects like English and Literature, the students can be asked to watch movies on the books being taught in class.

• The homework given should not be such that instills fear and anxiety on the child but it should build confidence.

• Homework should not be given everyday except they are few in number.

• Student's attention can be gotten or arrested by giving them homework based on their experiences or things around them.

Homework should be such that a student can do it herself or himself

CONCLUSION

Homework cannot be cut off totally as long as school goes on. But parents complain of too much homework to pupils and students and this should be looked into. Without homework, the purpose of teaching would be defeated to an extent. So homework is necessary but it shouldn't be abused or used as a firm of punishment on the student.
