"SLC | S22W2 : Anti-bullying Campaign by Teachers"

bossj23 -

Bossj23 is a shy and quiet student in class, and because of this, has chosen not to make friends or socialise because it feels almost difficult or impossible. There's this particular student, @toflex, who is very much popular, social, and vibey in class.

Everyone knows him, but he is making life miserable for bossj23 with his words and actions. Sometimes, he'll block bossj23 on his way to school and forcefully take his lunch so he'll remain hungry during break.

During class activities, he'll ridicule bossj23 in various ways. There was a time he placed gum and glue on bossj23's seat for him to sit. As he sat on it, it hurt so much. Everyone burst into laughter, and they saw bossj23 struggle to remove the gum. This made bossj23 avoid coming to school every day to bypass the insults, rumours, ridicule, and constant attacks.

This is what is termed as Bullying. Bossj23 is being bullied not just with hands but also with words.

In your language, What Have you learned about bullying? And give an example of anti-bullying that is applied in your country or around you.

The language I choose to speak out of all the languagesI know how to speak in my country is pidgin English and this is the language that is common in my locality. What I've learnt about bullying is that at times, you need to man up when you're being bullied. I'm not saying you should fight back or be a bully well. You can actually beat a bully without using your fist. Bullying is an act that is deliberate when one tends to harm or humiliate someone repeatedly, most times with the timid ones.

Bullying can take any form, which includes verbal attacks, physical bullying, social bullying (e.g., rumours), cyberbullying, etc. Bullying can happen anywhere, be it in schools, workplaces, communities, churches, etc., which leaves an emotional scar on the one being bullied.

Remember I said sometimes you need to man up. Man up how? You need to be strong in most cases and avoid dying in silence. When a bully tries to bully you, it's either you give the person a stern warning or you walk out of the scene to make the person look foolish instead of retaliating, as retaliating may cause even more pain.

If in a school setting, you can report to the authorities in the form of teachers to address the situation so it can stop or be put to an end. If you keep on weeping or dying in silence, it will never stop. People love it when you cry and look stupid. So you most times need to stand up and avoid situations where you'll have problems with people. Always look forward to being nice to everyone and avoid cases where you'll be hated by people or stumble them.

In Nigeria, I'll start from the Nigerian home as to how anti-bullying is being campaigned. In a Nigerian setting, you can't beat a girl or your sister if you're a guy. If your parents see or hear you beat or intimidate your girl sibling as the eldest, you'll be beaten as well. The feeling is it's not right for a man or boy to beat a lady. Let ladies beat themselves because if we men do so, we may end up becoming bullies in our marital homes when we'll constantly beat our wives.

These lessons by our parents have kept us from treating women badly, and we have grown up with that idea. Aside from this, we have also learnt how to avoid being bullies with others around us. I can remember in my secondary school days when seniors would humiliate junior students just to be entertained.

They'll give me 50 naira and tell me to buy something of 3000 naira for them, and if I don't, they'll beat me in a corner no one would find me and threaten that if I tell anyone, they'll kill me. It wasn't really an easy thing those days. When I became a senior, I thought of repaying back, but what's the point now? What do I stand to achieve? Treat people how you want others to treat you. Being kind was the only resolve, and I was the most loved amongst the seniors.

Save The School Initiative

Externally, Nigerians have created awareness about bullying in schools overtime. Most schools even campaign on this to create awareness, particularly for the senior students who feel they are worth more than many sparrows. I can remember an initiative called the Save the School initiative. This was aimed at creating a safe learning environment for students who are underage or overaged. It serves to protect students from terrorism in school, emphasising the need to make friends instead of being bullies.

Love is discipline in Action Programme

Love, kindness and compassion were emphasised to help them see why bullying tears down and why it's wrong. Some schools have disciplinary measures concerning bullying, which seems to be a form of anti-bullying measure to keep people away from bullying. When I was still in secondary school, punishments were set aside for students who engaged in such behaviours.

Punishments like expulsion, suspension, and being flogged in front of the whole school. These punishments actually prevented many from engaging in such acts to avoid facing the law. Some schools have still encouraged students to resolve conflicts peacefully through peer mediation, and this has really helped to curb such behaviours, helping students see how they can resolve conflicts among themselves instead of resorting to bullying.

This is an example of a bullying case and how the counselling initiative program helped the young boy treat his classmate well. He is now opposing bullying and has stood up against any form of bullying he sees. He doesn't stand to watch men beat women again. He'll always look for ways to bring peace among them.

Make an anti-bullying Poster or infographic with the creativity you have, complete with the steps to make it and the meaning of each image you make. Originality is the main thing of assessment.

For this contest, I created two anti-bullying posters or campaigns for this purpose with the following steps. The first one created is the one with a caption that we should stop bullying. We should be friends and not bullies. Everyone deserves a friend and not a bully.

So I pictured it in this way: a situation whereby the red say no circle would be presented as a first impression and a hand that portrays bullying would be shown in the centre to signify that the act is a bad one. So what did I do? These are the steps I took to accomplish this creativity.

We all should stop being bullies if we are such in school because of the position we acquire. Being a bully doesn't just spring from physically beating someone, but our words can bully someone. Is this girl ugly? You're ridiculing her with your mouth, reminding her she's ugly and then making jest of her. We should be friends with other people regardless of their tribe, physical status, etc.

Publish your videos to oppose bullying on social media; it can be YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok. Complete with the hashtag #antibullyingSteemit.

The video I published is about me as a teacher, standing up against bullying and also encouraging these young ones to stand against bullying. The children holding the posters were initially not in terms with the video I dropped, but as time went by, the boy saw the need to stop bullying girls and had a change of heart.

The scenario earlier showed how he bullied the girl physically by blocking her on her way home and then scattering her food pouch, leaving the girl in tears for being humiliated. The girl, on the other hand, retaliated by pulling his chair when he wanted to answer a question in class, and boom, the boy fell to the floor. The aftermath is that they became the best of friends and also took to supporting the campaign against bullying.

Write your campaign message against bullying, using your language.

Are you being bullied, or are you the bully? What does one gain from bullying? Strength? I don't think so. Weakness...Yes, because you can't assume that because you're in a position of authority, you can bully anyone older or younger than you are since you're more influential. You need to make a difference today. Treat others the way you want to be treated. You bring a bully who won't want others to bully you as well.

It's time we stop feeling bullying others is a form of entertainment or a form of making others feel strong. To the bullied, silence isn't the best answer when you're bullied. This behaviour would make you struggle to build confidence and trust in life; that's why we need to act now. Speak up, stand strong, and spread kindness.

Avoid doing things you feel would make people bully you. Sometimes, be friendly with the bullies even when ridiculed. With this, they'll see to it that their attacks aren't touching you and you aren't susceptible to them, but in a situation whereby you're emotionally attached to their bullies, they'll always attack you in all ramifications.

If you feel you don't have the energy to stand up, speak up. Let other people speak for you. Let other people be your word. Together, we can end bullying and make life better. We all need to be kind towards others, compassionate and loving, no matter the physical differences, tribe, age and the like. Say to be bullying and be the difference today.

If you see someone being bullied, don't encourage such an act and feel it's a form of entertainment. Speak up, step in, and help the person in such a situation if you can. Together, we can help others stand up against bullying and help the bullies see that their actions are wrong and shouldn't be condoned.

Teachers and parents, you both have the responsibility to ensure children are being taught kindness and empathy. It starts with you guys as they learn from your examples. Encourage your young ones to have open communication with you so you would know what their problems are and where to come in.

Ending bullying requires the courage to stand up against what is wrong and say yesterday to kindness and unity. It starts with you, with me, with them, with us, and today. Help tell a friend to stop bullying and help tell the bullied to speak up. Heal the world and make it a better place for you and for me and the entire human race," Michael Jackson sung these lyrics.
