It's actually with great pleasure that I'm writing this application. The integration of the teaching team with various courses has been impactful to me as a person. I've gotten to learn things originally I would have paid money to learn. It feels good to add to my store of knowledge, and it also feels good if I'm opportune to share what I know with others for free.

The fashion industry has been a sailing and productivity skill many are craving to have. How does it feel when you know how to amend your clothes yourself, know types of materials and how to identify which is good for a particular dress sense, know how to make basic stitches, and also know how to sew men's wears? It may not be a one-day learning process, but the satisfaction that comes with doing these without having to pay a tailor for services or to learn is indescribable.

That's why I'm appearing with this application as you are reading. To be detailed, I'll start by introducing myself, as you can't learn how to be professional in a digital or physical skill from someone who's a novice or is doing research to know and to teach you something practical. **What should you know about me?

Introduction - Who am I?

I'm Jephthah Moses by name known as @bossj23 on Steemit and known as a tailor and photographer in the real world as physical skills I have. I'm actually a passionate content writer on Steemit who creates contents originally on Steemit. For the past 3 years I've been a steemian and I've learnt something barely anyone would learn for free under 3 years of mentorship. I work as a moderator in two communities on Steemit, which are steemkids and steem4nigeria.

My love for the fashion industry has been intensely shown in my dress sense to events and meetings. Barely a day people don't ask me who sees my clothes because they are designed based on the latest trends. It surprises many to know I'm a jack of all trades. Though I'm a Nigerian student who is pursuing a degree in the university, I do photography and I design and create garments. Combining these skills has really helped me on the run, financially and mentally. How? This is how my garment making journey started.

Right from when I was in high school, I've had this interest in sewing and fashion designing. When I'm back from school, I would sit with my dad in his shop and sew pieces of clothing. This was how I started till I switched to weaving clothes, paddling machines, basic stitches, cutting, and sewing garments. I've had 10 years of experience in this field since 2014.

My greatest motivation to learn this skill even while in school was my dad, who uses this skill to feed and support his family as the breadwinner. It's from sewing we eat and go to school, I must admit. His enthusiasm and zeal towards this work have made me intentional about sewing and grew to become one who does it for both commercial and personal usage. This means I sew and amend my clothes myself.

His advice on taking this opportunity from him as his successor drove me crazy into the industry. He told me his experience on how his not placing hopes on white collar jobs after school is the reason we are feeding. If he didn't learn sewing at a tender age, he would have been fucked in life.

The experiences I've had in this field have moved me to share them with other youths out there. Steemit has also made an opportunity for me to share what I know how to do best with others virtually and physically. That's why I'm writing this application to seek that space where I can be a teacher after being taught for years and is now professional.

Details of my experience in the subject area as a professional

As a professional in this field, I've not just amended my clothes but have also sewn them. I have 10 years of experience in this field, as said at the onset.

4 years learning experience4 years professional experience
2 years working experience

I've learnt the skill for 4 years, including the basics of measuring and cutting garments. I've also professionally sewn clothes and am still learning how to be better than my father after 4 years. The remaining two years were when I had the best working experience of my life in the industry, sewing uniforms for schools, sewing senators and corporate wear for my father's customers, and also weaving clothes for both local tailors and firms

1000231770.jpg1000231771.jpg1000231769.jpg

Many say seeing is believing; the cloth you see me out on, this senator's outfit, was sewn by me from start to finish. I feel proud, bragging about this achievement. This wasn't my first sewn cloth, though. My level of professionalism and the way all clothes fit me have brought customers to my dad and me. Though I've not been sewing commercially due to school, I sew my personal clothes and amend worn-out clothes as well.

  • In basic sewing, I know how to paddle a machine, sew straight, which is the problem of most tailors, know how to weave clothes, amends, take measurements of clothes, and also know garment selection.
  • In medium basics, I know how to cut clothes straight, mark and join, and handle iron in gum application to fabrics and the like.
  • In advanced sewing, I know how to cut and sew shirts, uniforms, trousers, senators, natives, suits, etc.

There's no certification given me for learning this skill, as it's not backed by formal education. I learn from my dad, who's passing the formal education to his apprentice while I serve as a digital marketer or promoter of his work to the general public till I'm done with projects in college.

The below are pictures of my work as a professional tailor or garment creator. Now, what do I have to offer if given the opportunity to teach in season 21. Let me be specific.

1000231775.jpg1000231773.png1000231768.jpg

The subject area I want to cover in the course of this engagement challenge is Basics of Sewing/Tailoring and Alterations. This subject area covers specialisations such as introduction to sewing and how it differs from Tailoring and fashion designing, hand sewing techniques, garment selection in terms of colours and textiles, sewing machines and parts, basic stitches, types and threads, stitch selection, measurements, cutting and joining shirts and trousers for men, pattern making

The majority don't know these basics, and these are things you'll pay money to learn for your first three months physically, whereas I'll be teaching you for free with theoretical and video tutorials. I would have jumped into teaching how to sew men's clothes, but that won't be a realistic goal for this class. You must lay a foundation to avoid making people disinterested or seeing sewing as a burden or stress.

To be frank, this is what made many feel the courses are difficult, and that's the reason for a few entities in some engagement challenges.

Courses Sample for three weeks

For the first three weeks in which the challenge would run, I'll be specific and realistic with the basics, placing more emphasis on theories and practicals.

Week 1 — Introduction to Sewing and Sewing Machine Basics

This topic places emphasis on instilling interest in the minds of those that would be learning the course, framework, and basic sewing tools needed to create garments and design fabrics. These questions would be used as hints.

  • In your own words, elaborate on sewing and how it differs from tailoring and fashion designing.

  • Mention 5 basic sewing tools and their uses. Draw any two

  • Mention and describe 5 machine parts and their uses. Draw any two

  • Do you think learning this course for personal application can be beneficial to you and your household in the long run? State your reasons.

These questions would be backed by a tutorial, and then the students would be allowed to do their research on some things to build interest and not total reliance on the teacher's knowledge.

Week 2 — Hand Sewing Techniques

This focuses on basic stitches one can use hands and do with the aid of a sewing needle and thread. This is usually effective in teaching how to make simple patches and amends in worn clothes and materials in the house without having to visit a tailor to do the stitches. The students will learn basic stitches and how each of these stitches runs, ranging from types of stitches, thread and needle handling, seaming and joining, embroidery and repair, etc. These are questions that would be asked to see if the students understand the tutorial.

  • In your own understanding, elaborate on basic stitches and their importance in the sewing and textile industries.

  • Mention and explain 3 basic stitches and steps on how to sew it. Draw any two of the above mentioned

  • How do you join two pieces of fabric using a whipstitch? Demonstrate the steps using cardboard paper or a material with your thread and needle.

  • Write your username on Steemit with any basic stitch you know.

Week 3 — Measurements and Fabric Selection

This would cover tutorials on how to take basic body measurements, how to select materials or fabrics to sew a particular style of clothes, and matching colours of clothes. The questions that would be asked are:

  • What are the different types of measurements in sewing, and why is it important to be accurate?

  • Measure and record your own body measurements.

  • Describe the process of taking full body measurements if you want to sew a shirt and trouser for men. (Video tutorial is optional)

  • Mention 5 types of fabrics we have and tell us which two fabrics you've been using for your wears.

  • Which fabrics are good for sewing corporate shirts for men? State reasons for your choice of fabric.

Week 4 — 6 would be mainly practicals on amending clothes, cutting men's trousers specifically, sewing straight using a hand or sewing machine, and weaving

These are the areas I'll specialise on to be efficient, and a common goal is to make it easier for students to work on this. The grading system would be based on the work done.

Grading System

Hello @bossj23, Thank you for participating in this week's lesson. We have assessed your entry, and we present the result of our assessment below.

Observations:

As much as I would love to share my knowledge with steemians here, I look forward to the team considering my application, as the above is what I ought to do if selected for this challenge. Learning from others has also been one of the best gems I've gotten from this platform. That's why I see the need to reciprocate the favour so we'll have garment makers and fashion designers regardless of age in the industry.
