Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis Elbow or lateral epicondylitis is the condition in which pain and inflammation occur on the lateral side of the elbow, mainly involving the lateral epicondyle. As it's named lateral epicondylitis, it affects the lateral epicondyle.

There are other types of tennis elbow, radial tunnel syndrome, posterior interosseous nerve syndrome, and tennis elbow with radial head involvement.

Tennis Elbow diagnosis can be made by different methods, but commonly used are:

In physiotherapy, we perform some special tests to confirm the diagnosis.

  2. Mills Test
  3. Maudsley's Test
  4. Resisted Wrist Extension Test
  5. Middle Finger Test

Physical Therapy Intervention for Tennis Elbow

Physical therapy interventions for tennis elbow for days to weeks to regain normal range of motion or performing activities of daily living, rejoining sports team and subside the symptoms. Here are a few exercise videos that you have to perform to treat tennis elbow patients. Treatment protocols vary from patient to patient.

But the main thing is you have to evaluate the exact cause of tennis elbow, whether it's due to overuse or trauma. We can treat this condition completely with physical therapy, but sometimes surgical intervention is required if further damage occurs to muscles or tendons.

Ball Squeezing

Ball squeezing is an important exercise for wrist and forearm muscles. Because with ball squeezing, wrist and forearm muscles strength build and also improves in finer motor activities like eating and picking up anything.

Finger Stretch

Fingers stretching exercises are to improve the shortened muscles lengthened due to pain compensation. It also improves finger mobility and gripping ability.

Wrist Flexors Stretch

Stretches are important to perform to improve the length of shortened muscles for pain compensation. In this video, wrist flexors stretch to improve mobility and flexibility. Also, hold each stretch position in the lesson for at least 5 to 10 seconds.

Wrist Isometric Exercises

The another important part of treatment is to strengthen each muscles and in each direction. For that reason, isometric exercises are performed in different directions to strengthen the wrist and forearm muscles. In this exercise you also hold the position and also try to resist according to your muscle strength.

Apply a heating pad for 5 to 10 minutes. Also, do soft tissue mobilization before performing these exercises to reduce pain. Perform 5, 5 repetitions on the first week, then increase accordingly. These are the exercises for beginners as other exercises can by performed by professionals and experienced physiotherapist or gym trainer.
