• What are diary farmers doing to make their farms more sustainable?

Dairy Farm

Dairy farmers from Bangladesh are doing their best to make their farms sustainable and more efficient. A lot of people are going to try growing higher nutrition grass varietals for their cows that will help increase milk production. Hay and crop based feed like rice bran and sesame cake are improved types of hay which are also reasonably priced and reasonably nutritious foods to feed on for cows. This method will ensure the farmers offer good quality food at low cost, which will improve milk quality and production too.

Farmers are becoming more sustainable about energy management. Many farms are turning solar panels to cut down their electricity costs and biogas systems are gaining popularity. Biogas is produced from cow manure and other waste materials, can be used to cook & in some cases produce electricity. They reduce our waste and keep the environment clean.

• Explain what the diary farmers do with all the cow's manure?

Cow Manure

Cow manure is highly valued in rural Bangladesh. It is often used directly as natural fertilizer, keeping soil fertile and helping healthy crops. Chemical fertilizers have become less popular due to the long term damage these products can do to the soil, and as a result organic fertilizer is growing more popular as it is better for the soil. Many farms create biogas from manure that can be used for cooking or electricity.

People sometimes dry out manure into little cakes. Fuel to cook and warm our homes in winter by these dried manure cakes. This is good for farmers, and even good for the rural economy because it represents a cheap, eco friendly energy source.

• In details, explain what happens when a diary cow gets sick and what food do they eat?

Treatment for Cow

Farmers take quick action when a cow on its farm gets sick. They will call a vet, and they will keep the sick cow disconnected from the others. Emergency treatment is being provided from government and private vet centers located in various parts of Bangladesh. They also vaccinate against disease for the cows. In fact they give sick cows special food that is easy to digest and are recovering faster.

Healthy cows eat grass, hay, crop and proteins rice bran and sesame cake. When a cow is sick it gets softer, easier to digest food. Sometimes even mixed with vitamins and minerals to help boost her health. Cows are often fed many vitamins, minerals and proteins that will help them stay healthy and strong. Many farmers also add diet list for their farm.

• Do you think diary farming is good for the economy? Explain.

Dairy Farming for Economy

Dairy farming is very helpful for Bangladesh’s economy. Milk demand is increasing and dairy farms contribute to providing it. Milk produced locally is sold across the towns and the villages to cater for nutritional needs. This milk supply chain also gives jobs and strengthens rural economy.

Small and medium sized dairy farms help provide local people with job opportunities. They also make money by selling milk and dairy products. The benefit for Bangladesh is that producing more milk locally means less foreign milk has to be imported. As this dairy sector expands, Bangladesh can turn it into profitable business by exporting dairy products lifting economy even further.

Overall, dairy belongs to the growth of economy, enhances people’s nutrition and increases their living standards in rural areas.
