North Eastern Uganda is an exclusive safari destination with several wildlife and cultural experiences. The region is not visited like the western tourism circuit which makes Discovery Journeys even more enjoyable.

Northeastern Uganda has 3 main savanna-protected areas that include Pian Upe Reserve, Bokora Matheniko Reserve, and Kidepo Valley National Park. Pian Upe is Uganda's largest reserve and will be Uganda's largest National Park once fully elevated to a national park. With this, it will surpass Murchison Falls National Park which is currently Uganda's largest National Park.

##Pian Upe Reserve

Pian Upe has a unique ecosystem, unlike other savanna wildlife destinations in Uganda. It has dotted savannas with isolated trees and shrubs and is more likened to Masai Mara and Serengeti. The reserve is home to several wildlife species including the rare roan antelopes. It is also home to a large number of elands, waterbucks, zebras, and many other antelope species.

Giraffes are also present in the reserve and are easily spotted towering the open savannas. Pian Upe has impressive landscapes from the backdrop of Mount Kadam that stretches towards the Kenyan border.

The reserve has a few game drive tracks and several others under construction as it gears for the transition to a National Park. It can best be explored on game drives and guided nature walks.

##Bokora Matheniko Reserve

The Bokora Matheniko Reserve is located in the Napak district and can best accessed en route to Kidepo Valley National Park from Moroto. It is a great birding safari destination with several bird species including ostriches, and many others endemic to northern Uganda.

No serious safari adventures are happening at the Bokora Matheniko Reserve at the moment but we hope it will eventually be explored. At Discovery Journeys we prefer safari expeditions to such exclusive and less explored destinations for the ultimate journeys of discovery. We recommend a birding and nature walk excursion at the reserve as you stand a chance to see wildlife species that have not been seen by other travelers.

##Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda's most isolated national Park. It is located in the Karenga and Kaboong districts and also stretches to the Uganda-South Sudan Border. The park has a true African wilderness and is home to several wildlife species.

Kidepo is remarkable for its beautiful scenery and exclusive Discovery Journeys. The park (Kidepo), Pian Upe, and Lake Mburo are the only national parks in Uganda with Zebras. It is also home to giraffes, cheetahs, elands, elephants, and buffaloes among others. Kidepo has one of the highest buffalo populations in East Africa and it is often likened to the number of wildebeests in the Masai Mara and Serengeti ecosystem.

The park can be explored on game drives, guided nature walks, and birding safari adventures. Our 8-day Eastern Uganda safari features all the above destinations starting from Sipi Falls along the Mount Elgon Slopes. Visit Uganda for more.
