I hope everyone is well and enjoying their lives. This is a very good step for us that we can get a good knowledge about our map through this course. So this is the first step of this course. In this step, I will try my best to fulfill all the given activities. So for this, I am going to start my work. Let's go.
Design On Canva
Make a freehand map of your country (It can be on paper, a computer, or your cell phone, the only condition is that it must not be traced. |
---|
The first step is to randomly create our map, which may not be perfect. For this, I will try to create it using paper and pencil.
I will start making this map of mine with my boundary line. First, I will make its main boundary line and then I will make the provinces that are in between it and then I will mention the famous places. In the images below, you can see that I first created its boundary line.
Now I will mention all the provinces and famous places in Pakistan together so that my post does not become too long and does not seem too long, I will mention my province and the famous places that I want to visit and the places where I have been.
Within the freehand map that you made, locate where the capital of your country and where the state/department/province where you live. |

Capital:
My country is Pakistan and the capital of Pakistan is Islamabad, which is located in the province of Punjab. I have visited there once because the main campus of our university is there, which is called Pir Mahr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University.
Islamabad is located in the far corner of Punjab province, which meets Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and from there Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan begin. This is also a mountainous area and a beautiful city.
Home Town:
The largest province in Pakistan is Punjab province and I also belong to Punjab. The famous cities of Punjab province are Lahore and Multan. Our city Sahiwal is located between them. Sahiwal is a district. There is a small city in this district which we know as Harappa. Harappa is famous all over the world because there are ancient things here and it is an old city due to which it is known. I am a resident of Harappa City.
People from all over the world come to see the city of Harappa. It is an ancient city. Five thousand years ago, there was a lot of height here. Then, it is not known whether it was punished by Allah Almighty or it was located on the banks of a river. Perhaps it was swept away by the river or an earthquake. In this way, this city was destroyed and all the ancient things there are here, which people come to see. From all these things, it can be estimated that this city was very developed.
Locate within the map you made some states/departments/provinces that you know by heart (Only those that you know/remember at that moment, do not deceive yourself by cheating) |

This question is very surprising to me because as a resident of Pakistan, I have only lived in the province of Punjab. To date, I have not happened to visit any other province by chance, so I know the things of the province of Punjab better. I grew up here, I have been to different places here, and I know only the province of Punjab well.
Lahore:
The famous city of Punjab province is Lahore, which is called the city of living hearts. I have been there many times because there are many places there that people come to see. There are many tourist attractions that we see. There is Minar-e-Pakistan, Badshahi Mosque, Army Museum, and Zoo, there are many such things that we see and this city is very well developed. Lahore city is about 180 kilometers away from us, and it takes us about four to five hours to get there.
Multan:
Another famous city in Punjab province is Multan, which has a large number of Sufis. It is also a well-developed city with its own identity. I have been there two or three times by chance. Once I went to the airport to receive my brother. The second time I went to the protection office to get my uncle's visa protected. Multan city is about 150 kilometers away from us, and it takes us about three to four hours to get there.
Faisalabad:
Faisalabad is a famous city in Punjab province where we usually go because our relatives live there and we often go there. It is also a beautiful city. It is a major city in Punjab, just like Lahore and Multan. Similarly, Faisalabad is a smaller city than Lahore and Multan, but it is a beautiful city. Faisalabad is 100 kilometers from our home, and it takes us two to three hours to get there.
Islamabad:
Similarly, Islamabad is a famous city in Punjab, which is also our capital, so I have been there only once, and that too to my university. After going there, the memories of Faisalabad, Multan, and Lahore disappear because Islamabad has its beauty and after going there, the heart becomes happy. It is a mountainous area, cool winds blow, there is greenery everywhere and there are very good services. And this is also our capital. Islamabad is about 450 kilometers away from us, and it takes us six to seven hours to get there.
Mention 3 places in your country that you still don't know and that you would love to visit and why. |

By the way, I have only lived in one province of Pakistan. I would like to visit all the provinces, but in all these areas, there are some famous places that I like the most and I want to go there.
Mohenjo-Daro:
Like Mohenjo-Daro in Sindh province, which is a city like Harappa. Five thousand years ago, Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were two cities that were very famous in terms of their relationship with each other because these two cities were at their peak at that time. There is a distance of 624 kilometers between them, so I want to go to Mohenjo-Daro in Sindh province because that city was also destroyed like Harappa. And there are all the historical things there that were used by the people of five thousand years ago. Even now, whenever excavations are done there, different types of things are recovered from there, by looking at which the lifestyle of their time can be estimated. Therefore, it is my wish to see this place.
Quaid-e-Azam Residency:
Another famous place is Quaid-e-Azam Residency which is located in Balochistan. I want to go there because Quaid-e-Azam spent his last days there when he was ill. Apart from that, this place is peaceful, it is mountainous and it is heartwarming to see the surroundings and to sit in the place where our Quaid-e-Azam spent his last days. We want to thank Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali, who made all his efforts for us and made the country of Pakistan for us. I have heard that this residence is located in the middle of the mountains and because the surrounding environment is very beautiful, I want to go there. I have also heard that the layout of this Quaid-e-Azam Residency is similar to a British invention.
Hunza Valley:
There are many famous tourist destinations in Pakistan that people from all over the world come and enjoy, but while living in Pakistan, I want to explore and visit Hunza Valley because I have heard that the mountains there are beautiful. There are different types of lakes there which are made of clear water and during the land subsidence in the 2000s, a lake was also made there. I am very excited to see it. There are two famous forts there, Baltat and Albert Fort, which are 700 years and 1100 years old. It is heartwarming to see such an old fort. These are the forts where people enjoy themselves a lot. Apart from that, the people there are very hospitable and their culture is very good, so I am keeping this place in my heart for enjoyment.
What is a map for you? |

In my opinion, a map is an artwork that provides us with a visual representation of our locations and distances. It helps us to better understand the relationships between geographical features such as mountains, cities, roads, and rivers. It helps us navigate through all of these places. A map is a form that looks like a drawing, but each line, each sign, has a separate purpose.
The map is designed to convey information about a specific area or region. A map presents any spatial data in a simple form that makes it easy to visualize the layout of the area.
In your opinion, what are the most important elements to understand a map and why? |
---|
There are different types of elements to understand a map. The elements are as follows:
Scale: This is a special element of the map that shows us the ratio of the distance on the map to the actual distance. Through this, users can easily understand how far apart places are from each other and accordingly, they can plan their preparation or trip.
Labels: Labels include various things such as the name of a place or a road or any landmarks that indicate something. All these labels are placed so that places can be identified in a good way and they can be easily navigated. If these labels are not there, users will have to try to understand this area or these specific routes.
Legend: The legend explains all the symbols and colors used on the map, which represent different types of roads, rivers, or cities. It represents their elements well. Without a clear understanding of any symbol, we cannot interpret it correctly on the map.
Topography: Topography includes both elevation and terrain. It describes the details of elevation or terrain, such as mountains, valleys, and other landforms. It is usually very important for hikers.
Compass: Compasses usually tell us the direction of the map and usually point us toward the north. We can interpret any map correctly and determine its directions after understanding orientation.
Coordinates: Our coordinates include latitude and longitude, which provide us with an easy way to find our actual location on Earth. These direct directions point us to the exact location of the places that have latitude and longitude.
In your opinion, is cartography important or not so important? Why? |
---|
There are many reasons why cartography is important, they are listed below.
- Cartography is important because it allows us to explore new areas and understand our surroundings. It helps us navigate space safely.
- Cartography is very important for planners because it helps them create a good design between utilities and transportation that is best for our resources and also favors space.
- Cartography also plays an important role in tracking emergencies, which helps us plan and provides us with information to assess damage.
- Maps are also used to teach world history, thereby promoting a better understanding and a better relationship between different regions and cultures.
That is the task I complete with full attention. Thank you so much for staying here. I would like to invite @bossj23, @abdullahw2, @kouba01, and @aviral123 to join this challenge.
